Cops say men used cleaver, beer bottle in robbery attempt

FREDERICK, Md. - One of two men who allegedly attempted to rob another man with a meat cleaver and a beer bottle at Frederick Towne Mall Sunday afternoon was caught by Frederick City Police shortly after the 3:20 p.m. incident.

Jose L. Romero, 20, of Frederick, was charged with robbery, attempted robbery, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, police said.

The victim told police he was attacked by two men who attempted to rob him. One man hit the victim in the head with a full beer bottle while the other attempted to hold the victim.

The second man, later identified as Romero by the victim, pulled a meat cleaver from his pants and threatened the victim with it, police said.

A mall security officer attempted to intervene and received a small cut on his hand, police said. He was treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

The victim broke free and ran. Both suspects also fled but Romero was found, taken into custody and identified by the victim, police said. The meat cleaver was recovered.

The other suspect, who is still at large, was described as a Hispanic man with a medium build and dark hair.
