Post 211 walks off with win

FUNKSTOWN - When teams turn their caps inside out and put them on backwards, they're usually not begging for the kind of rally that Funkstown Post 211 pulled off on Saturday.

Funkstown scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to take a 6-5 win from Mt. Airy Gold Star Post 191 at Funkstown Park.

But there were no heroic home runs, no squeeze bunts, not even a sacrifice fly to end the game ... just a lot of standing and watching.

Trailing 5-4, David Miner reached on an infield error before Funkstown drew four straight walks to bring across the tieing and winning runs.

Matt Johnson, Matt Allen, Aaron Showe and Josh Carter saw a total of 17 pitches in the final rally. The first 15 pitches were balls.

"It's a win," Funkstown manager Darryl Powell said. "In the last two innings, we were definitely very patient at the plate. That is what you have got to be when you are down by one run. I feel very, very lucky and relieved that we got that win. Today was one of these days that we didn't hit the ball. Defensively, we played well. But our bats weren't here."

Funkstown's 6-foot-5 reliever Cole Bellon got the win by hurling three scoreless innings.

"I just hit my spots," Bellon said. "My arm felt strong. I just tried to keep the ball down. I was satisfied with my performance. Our hitters were just patient at the plate and they had confidence to win the game. We're on a good pace to win the district title."

Carter and Gerry Spessard each had two hits, including a home run, for Funkstown. Showe also had two hits.
