Charles Town man killed in I-70 crash

June 14, 2002

FREDERICK, Md. - A Charles Town, W.Va., man was killed Thursday afternoon when a tractor-trailer crossed the median of Interstate 70 west of Bill Moxley Road and hit his car, Maryland State Police in Frederick said.

David Stefka, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 12:47 p.m. accident, state police said.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Michael Stickley, 34, of Winchester, Va., was not injured, police said. He was charged with failing to reduce speed in dangerous weather conditions.

Police alleged Stickley's 1990 International rig was westbound during a steady rain when it left its lanes, ran into the median and entered the eastbound lanes. There it hit Stefka's Audi, spinning it into the path of a Dodge Durango, police said.

Stefka was thrown from the car, according to police.

The three occupants of the Dodge Durango received minor injuries.

I-70's eastbound lanes were closed until 4 p.m.
