Library group's head asks BOE not to cut job

The president of the Washington County School Library Media Association on Tuesday asked the county Board of Education to reconsider cutting the position of supervisor of school library media services.

Martha Cordova, association president and librarian at North Hagerstown High School, said the supervisor provides leadership and performs duties that otherwise would have to be done by the librarians.

The supervisor position was one of the cuts included in the budget the School Board approved last week.

Board member Mary Wilfong said she hopes the cut will not affect service as that supervisor's duties have been transferred to other positions.

McGee says substitute custodians save money

Washington County Public Schools has saved about $20,000 in overtime expenses by hiring additional custodians, Dennis McGee, schools director of facilities management, said Tuesday.

From November through April, seven new full-time substitute custodians helped reduce overtime costs, he said.

McGee said having the full-time substitutes to fill in for absent custodians could save $50,000 to $75,000 over a year.
