Funkstown walks into 1-run victory

WILLIAMSPORT - Funkstown Post 211 learned the good way that patience really can be a virtue.

Funkstown received nine free passes from Williamsport Post 202 on Tuesday night and turned them into a 6-5 victory for first place in the Western Maryland District.

"It was a real good ballgame," Funkstown manager Darryl Powell said. "The key to us winning was to be patient against Nick Adenhart. Today, we were patient against him for the whole time. We got him up high in the pitch count and that is what you have to do to beat him. We got the hits when we needed them."

Funkstown starter Josh Carter gave up only three earned runs and struck out six in 6 1/3 innings to get the win, which put his team a half-game up on Williamsport (13-6, 4-3) in the league.

He got the win against his former teammate at St. Maria Goretti High.

"I knew that I had to get on top," Carter said. "That was the key. Once I got ahead in the count, I was able to use all of my other pitches effectively. Nick Adenhart is a tough pitcher. You know that he is going to have his stuff every time that he goes out there to pitch. I give him credit as well."

He just didn't have enough. Down 4-3 in the fourth, Funkstown (10-2, 4-2) made its rally.

Matt Hess and Mike Vaverchak both singled and moved into scoring position on Miner's sacrifice and Matt Johnson's walk loaded the bases.

Matt Allen's infield single scored Hess to tie the game, and Vaverchak and Johnson both scored on wild pitches for a 6-4 game.

"There were too many walks and too many runs off of walks," Williamsport manager Rick Keefer said. "That was the difference in the game."

Carter and Hess finished with two hits each for Funkstown.

Williamsport reliever Adam Mills pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Keith Kellinger got two hits while Eric Fitzgerald added two hits and three RBI for Williamsport.
