Dementia seminar offered

"Best Practices in Dementia Care" seminar will be held Thursday, June 20, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Plaza Hotel in Hagerstown. This annual conference is designed to provide an update on the latest best practices for the care of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder for health care professionals and family members.

The seminar is designed for health and human service providers, families of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other memory disorders, and those who are involved in providing services and/or care to memory-impaired individuals.

Topics to be addressed are "The Validation Method and Managing Difficult Behaviors," "Pain Management in the Elderly Confused Person," "Humor: A Prescription for Coping with Caregiver Stress" and "New Treatments for Alzheimer's Disease." The program also will include a panel presentation by area agency representatives.

Retreat on lupus sponsored

"Stress Management Retreat: Living Well with a Chronic Illness," a program for people with lupus, their families and friends, sponsored by the Maryland Lupus Foundation, will be Saturday, June 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rising Phoenix Retreat Center, 13210 Green Ridge Road NE, Flintstone, Md.

Wellness Fair offers screenings

BOONSBORO - Boonsboro Wellness Fair will be held Thursday, June 13, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at American Legion Post 10, 710 N. Main St. The fair is sponsored by Boonsboro Family Practice and Washington County Hospital.

During the fair, health screenings will be provided by medical professionals. Screenings will include blood pressure, body fat analysis, respiratory, nutrition, brake timing, hearing and vision testing, bone density and blood testing. All of the screenings are free with the exception of the bone density (osteoporosis) screening, which is $22 per person; and glucose/cholesterol, which is $12 per person.

Dr. William F. Bodenheimer III of Boonsboro Family Practice will be available to answer questions and discuss other wellness issues.

Children also will enjoy activities such as a visit from Woolie B., the mascot of the Hagerstown Suns, and a local ambulance on display. Child safety seat inspections and bike safety education also will be available.

Massage school seeks volunteers

BLUE RIDGE SUMMIT, Pa. - Synergy Healing Arts Center and Massage School is seeking volunteers for massage training. Volunteers must be women in the fourth through ninth months of pregnancy, infants and children ages 2 months to 12 years.

A prenatal massage clinic will be held Thursday, June 13, 6:45 and 7:45 p.m. Participants must be in good health and have their doctor's written permission. FREDERICK, Md. - "Movement with Passebilities: Yoga and Dance for Children with Special Needs, Siblings and Friends" will be offered Tuesday, June 25, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The class will be held at Fort Detrick, Building 949, Sultan Drive. The instructor is Connie Berlin, registered movement therapist and instructor in yoga for the special child.

Parents are encouraged to join in the fun as well as to give assistance to their child where needed.
