New advertising director named at The Herald-Mail

June 10, 2002

Scott Stavrakas has been hired as advertising director of The Herald-Mail Co., effective today.

Stavrakas will lead The Herald-Mail's advertising department, and ultimately be responsible for all advertising that appears in the newspaper, all newspaper-related products and the Web site.

Since December 1998, he has been an advertising director for Madison Newspapers, a group of weekly and daily newspapers in the Madison, Wis., area. The papers are part of the Lee newspaper group. He has been responsible for two dailies, five weeklies, two shoppers and a TMC product. He supervised a 40-person staff.

Stavrakas has also worked for newspapers in Illinois, Colorado and Wyoming. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University.

"I'm excited about the possibilities that exist in Hagerstown," he said. "The area's retail base is greater than I thought it would be, and I want to help the businesses here reach their potential.

"I've worked in both large and small markets, and owned a restaurant in Illinois for five years, so I can also relate to what small businesses are going through. I've always felt one of my strengths in advertising was understanding, and empathizing with, the businesses I've dealt with."

Stavrakas and his wife, Rose, have two children, Paul, 12, and Bethany, 8.
