Skydiver hurt during jump

June 09, 2002

A Laurel, Md., man was in serious condition Saturday after a 2 p.m. skydiving accident at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center.

Experienced jumper Kenneth Chapman, 45, got caught by a gust of wind just before landing that carried him sideways. Instead of landing forward, he came in at an angle, Maryland State Police said.

Chapman was treated and stabilized by Sharpsburg Rescue Service before being flown by state police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Chapman, who jumps with the Chambersburg (Pa.) Skydiving Center, was performing for a trade show and picnic held by the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Cumberland Valley.
