Ex-Trojan Hart drafted by Pirates

June 07, 2002

Chambersburg High School graduate Alex Hart was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft on Tuesday.

Hart, a right-handed pitcher who just completed his junior season at the University of Florida, was taken with the 133rd pick overall.

It's the second time the 1998 Herald-Mail Co-Player of the Year has been drafted. Hart was taken in the second round (69th overall) by the Baltimore Orioles after his senior season in high school.

Rather than sign with Baltimore, Hart opted to attend Florida, where he red-shirted one season and endured two more injury-filled years before putting together an outstanding junior campaign.

Hart was 13-3 with a 3.24 earned run average this season, earning him All-Southeastern Conference first team honors. He allowed 81 hits and struck out 81 in 111 innings.
