Three Smithsburg Girl Scouts receive Gold Awards

June 05, 2002

Three Girl Scouts from the Smithsburg area recently received scouting's highest honor for starting a Hagerstown City day camp.

Scouts Sylvia Barvir, Lynette Bolinger and Patricia Mitchell were honored with the Girl Scout Gold Award for developing the camp for the so-called "HotSpot" high-crime area of the city.

The girls' program includes storytelling, introducing camp participants to such reading facilities as the local library, and helping campers realize that reading can be fun.

Gold Award winners must first earn the Senior Girl Scout Leadership Award, design a self-development plan, earn the career exploration pin and four interest project patches, and spend at least 50 hours planning and implementing a Gold Award project that has a positive and lasting impact on the community.
