ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. - A Smithsburg native was one of several Air Force members from Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., who were recognized for accomplishments in 2001 by wing officials during the 28th Bomb Wing 2001 annual awards ceremony at the base recently.

Capt. Joseph Gardenhour, 28th Logistics Support Squadron maintenance operations officer, was named the base's company grade officer of the year for, in part, ensuring all areas of the 28th Logistics Group were prepared for the Air Combat Command Inspector General team's Phase II Operational Readiness Inspection in May 2001.

Gardenhour created a 50-person division that reviewed the wing's logistics processes. Base officials said his efforts increased aircraft parts delivery by 10 percent and increased B-1 capability by 30 percent for Operation Enduring Freedom.
