MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The second day of a hand recount in Berkeley County ended Monday with Steve Teufel in the lead for the Republican nomination for a Berkeley County Commission seat.
The recount of the May 14 primary race began at 1 p.m. and was halted at 5 p.m. At that time, Teufel, of Martinsburg, had 754 votes; Bill Alexander, of Martinsburg, had 718 and James L. Edwards, of Hedgesville, had 577 votes.
Teufel, who was ahead of Edwards by eight votes after a canvass of the election held the week after the primary, was ahead by 10 votes. Edwards lost a vote in precinct 44 on Friday and gained one in precinct 23 on Monday. Teufel gained one vote in both precinct 19 and 23 on Monday, and Alexander gained one vote in precinct 19, according to election officials.
