SHARPSBURG - Tim Schuler, of Chambersburg, Pa., turned his first race at Antietam Battlefield into a victory Sunday in the 23rd annual Run Through History.

Schuler covered the 10K course in 33:47.8 to win the top prize of $300 while leading the charge of 284 finishers.

"The heat and early morning sun nearly got to me," said Schuler, who competes for the Inside Track Racing Team from Lancaster, Pa.

Kevin Geesaman, who won the 2000 race, finished second in 34:25.2 while Chris Perschuk was third in 34:55.1.

Amy Debor was the top finisher in the women's division.

Debor, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., finished eighth overall in a time of 37:30.6. Debor competed in college for Mount Saint Mary's. Brenda Schrank finished second in 39:03.9 while Susan Gray was third in 39:22.9.


Maria Spinnler, of Hagerstown, a five-time winner of the race, won the women's Masters division in 39:48.4 while Andy Smyth was the top men's Masters finisher in 37:30.2.


Mt. Airy 6-1, Funkstown 5-4

MT. AIRY, Md. - T.J. Hose pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts - including six straight - as Funkstown 211 gained a spilt with Mt. Airy in American Legion Western District play. Hose shut down Mt. Airy until allowing a run in the seventh to win his second game of the season in the nightcap. Aaron Showe had two hits and two RBI to lead Funkstown.

Funkstown (6-1, 2-1) missed a chance to gain a sweep in the opener, wasting a good outing by pitcher Josh Carter. Carter struck out four and walked just two before leaving with the go-ahead run on base in the sixth.

Danny Fowler had two hits for Funkstown.

Williamsport 3-1, Frederick 2-3

WILLIAMSPORT - Adam Mills threw a compete-game as Williamsport Post 202 scored the winning run in the sixth inning of the opener for a split of a doubleheader with Frederick.

Mills (2-1) allowed two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out six. Frederick's Tony Magnelli lost in a complete-game effort, allowing six hits and striking out seven.

Keith Kellinger had two hits to lead Post 202 (10-3, 3-1) while Taylor Covey and Pat Blake had two hits for Post 11.

In the nightcap, Pat Blake had three hits and Alexander Dub'e added two to lead Frederick (6-3, 1-3).

Williamsport's Jason Embly pitched a complete-game loss despite allowing only one earned run on seven hits while striking out three. Post 202's offense failed to help Embly out though, stranding 11 runners.

Hagerstown 16-3, Greencastle 4-1

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Nate Reeser went 4-for-4 with three RBI, including two doubles and three RBI in a 10-run fifth inning, to lead the Hagerstown Braves to a victory in the opener of a doubleheader.

The Braves (10-1, 9-1) used solo homers by Mike Spry and P.J. Heiser to power to a sweep in the nightcap.

Hagerstown sent 14 hitters to the plate in the fifth for the rally to end the game by the 10-run rule. Trey Cobb had a two-run double and Mike Kipe also had two hits in the inning.

Eric Sheetz struck out five to get the complete-game victory. Pat Sweeney, Zack Swisher, Kipe and Spry had three hits each in Hagerstown's 20-hit outburst.

In the nightcap, Heiser finished with two hits to support Nathan Butts' victory. J.R. Fitzwater pitched the final two innings for the save.

Hagerstown Kitchens 11, Commonwealth Office Systems 8: Tyler Braithwaite pitched a compete-game with eight strikeouts to lead Hagerstown Kitchens. Carl Spessard drove in the winning run in the seventh. T.J. Cooper had three hits for Commonwealth Office Systems.

Hagerstown PONY League

Redmen 8, UAW 3: Aerik Taylor struck nine to lead Redmen to a victory and first place in the second-half standings. Kevin Tyler homered and Alex Tyler struck out nine for UAW.

F&M Bank 8, Hahn's AMACO 6: Chad Rupert and David McSherry had two hits for F&M.

Carol Manor Frederick 9, F&M Bank 4: Nick Vierre and Ryan Harshman had for F&M.
