Local roundup - Waynesboro loses in states

COPLAY, Pa. - A.J. Freelove went seven complete innings, but gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth as Liberty defeated Waynesboro 2-1 in the Pa. Class AAA first round on Monday.

Freelove (6-3), who struck out four and walked three, gave up a leadoff triple to Ryan Jaxheimer in the eighth. Then, Matt Geiger flared a single into left field for the game winner.

Joe Weatherald knocked in Waynesboro's only run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Adam Caron had two hits for Waynesboro (17-9).

Williamsport 4-4, Taneytown 2-1

Craig Henson and Josh Mitchell combined ona two-hitter, striking out 17, and Ben Jordan had two hits for Williamsport in its first game Sunday.


Jay Love struck out nine, had three hits and two RBI and Josh Bowers had for hits for Williamsport (9-, 7-1 in Mid-Maryland).


Hagerstown 5, Waynesboro 3

The Hagerstown Braves scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, keyed by RBI singles from P.J. Hiser and Jason Rhea, to top Waynesboro.

Derek Hoffman came in in the fifth inning, allowing no hits, and striking out six to get his first win of the season for the Braves (11-1, 10-1).

American Little League

Funkstown Legion 5, Elks 1: George Casper had two hits and Demetrius Stubbs had 12 strikeouts for Funkstown. Elvin Fulton had two hits for Elks.

FOP 8, Eagles 2: Justin Myers hit a home run and Gerald Tonsil had two hits for FOP.

Sharpsburg Little League

Builders Assistants 10, Lions Club 3: Seth Poffenberger struck out nine and had four hits while Dylan Thackston and Jordan Young had two hits for Bulders. Patrick Waftler had two hits for Lions.

Halfway Little League

Valley Storage Bins 16, Gibneys Florist 7: Justin Poffenberger had four hits, including a home run, while Dee Scott and Mike Warrenfeltz had three hits for Valley. Josh Cline and Jason Hammond had two hits for Gibneys.

South Mountain Little League

Lions 9, Reese's 7: Eli Beard had two hits, including the game-winning home run, for Lions. John Shobe had two hits for Reese's.

Maugansville Junior League

Commonwealth Office Supply 12, Carbaugh's 2: T.J. Cooper and Kenny Wilkins combined on a two-hitter, Daniel Jacobs had three hits and Cooper and John Billman had two hits for Commonwealth.

Hagerstown PONY League

FOP 11, Firefighters 1: Andy Morris struck out nine and Morris had two hits for FOP.

FOP 16, Hagerstown Floors 7: Scott Keeney had four hits, including a home run, Cameron Shifler had three hits, including a homer, Cody Poffenberger had three hits and Andy Morris had two hits, including a home run, for FOP. Tyler Braithwaite had three hits, while Adam Merrbaugh had two for Hagerstown Floors.

Redmen 11, UAW 6: Mark Dattilio and Adam Tosten each had two hits and Aerik Taylor and Cory Itnyre each homered for Redmen. Alex Tyler had a two-run homer and Kevin Tyler had two hits for UAW.

West End Little League

VFW 6, AFL-CIO 2: Jodi McElroy had 13 strikeouts scattering three hits for VFW. Jeremy Smith and Greg Lyman combined for 10 strikeouts, also allowing three hits while Aaron Stoner had two hits for AFL-CIO.

West End Minor League

FOP 9, Woodpoint 8: Derik Ditlow and Dakota Burns had two hits for FOP.

Conococheague Junior League

Redmen 17, Cavetown 7: John Combs had three hits while Sonny Hines hadd two for the Redmen.

M&T Bank 11, Valley Storage 10: Steven Shoemaker and Dylan Rowe each had three hits for M&T. Chirs Baker had three hits for Valley Storage.

Redmen 10, Byers' Market 0: Kyle Cunningham pitched a one-hitter and Greg Minnick had two hits for Redmen.

Clear Spring Minor League

Blue Jays 15, Pirates 8: Hunter Thorne had three hits while Tyler Forrest, Tommy Wolfe, Josh Faith each added two hits for Blue Jays.

Clear Spring Little League

Reds 10, Blue Jays 0: Brett Turner had two hits for the Reds. Ronnie Manners had two hits for the Blue Jays.

National 7-8

Antietam 18, Funkstown Legion 15: Jayme Southerland had three hits for Antietam as Logan Appel, Dylan Brawner and Dylan McNabb each had two hits in the win. Jordan Dickens, Ryan Butts, Chuck Rhinehardt, and Brett Barr all had two hits in the loss for Funkstown.

Funkstown Legion 16, UAW 13: Ryan Butts, Brett Barr, Charlie Dietrich and Chuck Rhinehardt all had two hits for Funkstown. Rhinehardt also drove in three runs for the winners. Josh Miller and Tyler Brown both had two hits for UAW.

National Little League

Funkstown Legion 5, Longmeadow Exxon 0: Greg Kennedy fired a three-hit shutout and Steven Mills had two hits for Funkstown Legion. Brittany Hyatt led Longmeadow Exxon with two hits.
