Sharpsburg playground equipment installation on hold

SHARPSBURG - The new playground equipment has arrived, but Sharpsburg officials aren't sure when it will be installed.

Town Council members had hoped Washington County parks and recreation workers could install the equipment, but the earliest they can get to it is September, Vice Mayor Hal Spielman said Monday night.

The council approved about $20,000 to buy the equipment from Miracle Recreation Equipment Co. in Martinsburg, W.Va. It ended up costing approximately $17,600, Mayor Sid Gale said. It would cost $12,400 or an extra $10,000 for installation, landscaping and mulch, Gale said.

The town has the money to cover the extra cost, but town officials were hesitant Monday night to approve the extra funding without at least trying to explore other options.

"I hate to wait all summer, but I also hate to pay $10,000," Councilwoman Patti Hammond said.

Councilman J.W. Eichelberger said it was "ridiculous" to spend that much money to install the swing set, spring toys and two toy storefronts in the playground next to Lonnie L. Crampton Memorial Park.

Eichelberger made a plea to the community to see if a company or group is willing to come forward and help with the installation.
