MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Parkland (55-9) scored six runs in the first three innings to jump ahead of Frederick Community College (36-9) on its way to a 6-3 victory in the NJCAA Division II National Championship game at USA Stadium on Friday night.

Ethan Lare, Daryl Turner, and Corie O'Bryan led Frederick with two hits each. Lare and O'Bryan, along with Josh Ernst of Frederick, also made the 2002 All-Tournament Team.

Chambersburg falls in semis

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Buoyed by five service aces and a team-high 14 kills by Gary Vogel, Hempfield High School successfully defended its PIAA boys' volleyball title Saturday with a 2-1 victory over North Allegheny High School.

The Black Knights, the second-seeded team from District 3, lost the first game 6-15 but bounced back to win the next two, 15-8, 15-8.


The state championship is Hempfield's fifth in the last eight years.

In the semifinals played earlier Saturday, Hempfield defeated Pennsbury 2-0 (15-10, 15-9) and North Allegheny defeated Chambersburg, 2-0 (15-9, 15-13).


Funkstown 9, Frederick 8

FREDERICK, Md. - Aaron Showe and Matt Allen each had four hits and three RBI to lead Funkstown Post 211 over Frederick Post 11 in its Western Maryland District opener at Harry Grove Stadium.

Matt Johnson had two hits and an RBI for Funkstown (5-0, 1-0).

Nathan Steelman threw a one-hitter and Phillip Powell had a solo homer for Funkstown in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Walkersville. Jeff Mills and Jeremy McAfee had three hits each, while Powell, Steelman, Kyle Robinson, T.J. Bowser and Patrick Hutzler each had two hits.

In the second game, Hutzler and Colby Thompson had three hits each, while Daniel Lynn and Wayne Rumbaugh had two each for Funkstown (14-1).


Clear Spring Minor League

Pirates 10, Cubs 8: Trenton Smith had three hits, including a three-run triple, for the Pirates. Jared Brandt had two hits for the Cubs.

Conococheague Little League

Taylor Trucking 15, Post 202 5: John Sanders had four hits, Jackson Rowland had three and Butch Reger had a home run for Taylor Trucking. Travis Kelley had three hits, while Nate Lowry and Adam Cook had two apiece for Post 202.

Reid's Elevator 16, Valley Storage 10: Dustin Violet and Zachary Clark each had three hits, while Hunter Eyler and Scott Drury had two each for Reid's. Chris Baker had two hits for Valley Storage.

Federal Little League

Rotary 14, Lions 3: Pudge Amalfitano, Grant Williams and Kyle Hoffman each had three hits and Colin McWilliams homered to lead Rotary. McWilliams and Cody Nelling had two hits and Amalfitano, McWilliams and Nelling combined on a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Goodwill 13, Elks 8: Brandon Blahut had two hits, including a three-run homer, to lead Goodwill. Dustin Stottlemyer, Brad Hineman and Mardell Hensley each had two hits for Goodwill.

FOP 9, Hagerstown Eagles 4: Mason Herman homered for Eagles.

Halfway Little League

Valley Storage Bins 7, Lions 5: Justin Poffenberger and Kevin Botts combined on a one-hitter and Matt Deike, Danny Spickler and Dee Scott each had two hits for Valley.

Hoffman Auto 4, Gibney's 0: Zach Malphurs and Andrew Duff combined on a three-hitter and Malphurs had two hits to lead Hoffman.

Hancock Little League

Pittman's Astros 7, Vance Corp. Yankees 2: Dylan Whiteside and Ty Trainor had two hits, while Andrew Merica struck out 10 to lead the Astros.

Tigers 7, Pirates 2: Colt Redman had 13 strikeouts and had four hits to lead the Tigers.

Junior Interleague

Designs Unlimited 18, Hancock 10: Zach Merrimen had three hits and David Harmon had two for Designs Unlimited. Joel Barnhart had four hits, while Eric Footen and Brad Harden had three hits for Hancock. Footen also homered.

Maugansville Junior League

Executone 15, Penn Ave. Meats 5: Josh Keyfauver went 4-for-4 with a home run and Tanner Brown and Bret Bloom each had two hits to lead Executone. Corey Monney had two hits for Penn Ave.

National Little League

Long Meadow Exxon 11, AMVETS 4: Brittnay Hyatt and James Jordan each had three hits and Seth Yonker had two hits, including a home run, for Long Meadow Exxon. Wes Samples had two hits for AMVETS.

AMVETS 15, FOP 8: Wes Samples had four hits, including a home run, T.J. Smith and J.R. Murray had three each and Blake Bandeff had two for AMVETS.

Funkstown Legion 4, Crampton 3: Allen Barnett had two hits and Steven Mills homered to lead Funkstown Legion. Adrian Adams and Tyler Kalkbrenner had two hits each for Crampton.
