HCC alumni honor three '87 graduates

Hagerstown Community College Class of 1987 graduates Patricia Churchey Friend, Terry Glunt and Kathy Robeson Valentine have been honored by the HCC Alumni Association as its 2002 Community Citation Award winners.

The Community Citation Awards are presented annually to HCC graduates from 15 years prior for their involvement in community service.

Friend, communications manager at Mack Powertrain, is active with the Western Maryland Hospital, Northern Middle School PTA and Bowl for Kids' Sake. She also serves as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army.

She has served as executive director of Washington County's Hands Across America and executive director of the Miss Washington County Scholarship Foundation and has been vice president of the International Management Council of the YMCA. For the bone marrow donor drive, she served as marketing chairwoman.

Through her involvement with the Hagerstown Jaycees, she was named Woman of the Year for her work as child fingerprinting chairperson, newsletter editor and work on other committees. She chaired the Washington County Cystic Fibrosis Annual Fund Drive and has been active with the Miss Maryland Scholarship Foundation as a state pageant backstage volunteer, dresser and seamstress.

Glunt is a training specialist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

For the past 26 years, he has been a volunteer pre-hospital care medic with Community Rescue Service and the Williamsport Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Glunt estimates he has assisted more than 1,000 people in time of emergency.

In addition, he has served as a trainer and mentor and assisted with administrative duties for CRS and the ambulance service.

Glunt devotes monthly volunteer time as an instructor at Children's Village of Washington County. He has also assisted with Cub Scouts and served as a volunteer assistant baseball coach.

Valentine works at Wright-Gardner Insurance as a commercial account executive.

During the past year, she has served as a judge for the Newspaper in Education adult spelling bee, co-chairperson of the Job Service Employers Committee, Webmaster and board secretary for the Society of Human Resource Managers and board member of the HCC Alumni Association. She has also been involved with the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce for many years.

Most recently, she served on the Casino Night planning committee.
