Trojans advance to District 3 final

May 30, 2002

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa - Chambersburg baseball coach Bob Thomas understands the game - both in its play and also in its idiosyncrasies.

Lightning and thunderstorms halted Tuesday's Pa. Class AAA District 3 semifinal with Waynesboro leading 3-2 but Chambersburg had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the fifth inning.

"You never know about these things," Thomas said. "We thought we had the momentum, but you just don't know."

Chambersburg managed only one more run that inning when the teams returned to Shippensburg Memorial Park, but the Trojans scored three times in the top of the eighth to defeat the Indians 7-4 and reach tonight's District 3 championship game at Newport against Manheim Township.

"Because of state rules, neither starting pitcher could come back (Wednesday)," Thomas said. "There we had bases loaded and no outs and we only scored one more. Then, in the eighth, we had two outs and scored three."

With two outs, Andy Carter walked. Lascelles Riley singled and Ryan Hinkle followed with a two-run double. Mark Olson then added an RBI double for the 7-4 lead.

Hinkle had four RBI, Olson had two hits and two RBI and Carter had two hits and three runs scored for Chambersburg.

Justin Kauffman had three hits and two RBI for Waynesboro, which will play for the third and final state playoff berth.
