Indians, Trojans have to wait

May 29, 2002

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Lightning and thunder were the words of the day Tuesday for the Pa. Class AAA District 3 semifinals, both on and off the field.

Between the chalk lines of Shippensburg Memorial Park, both Chambersburg and Waynesboro let their bats do the talking in the first four innings. Above them, Mother Nature put on a better show.

Finally, in the top of the fifth, the Trojans and Indians were sent home for the night and a 3-2 ballgame was suspended in the top of the fifth inning.

With a run already in, Chambersburg has the bases loaded, no outs and a 1-0 count to leadoff batter Mark Olson. The game will pick up there at 5 p.m. today, again at Memorial Park.

For the third time this season, both teams sent their ace pitchers to the mound and hitters' adjustments clearly showed. Waynesboro's A.J. Freelove and Chambersburg's Irvin Sleighter average over a strikeout per inning - they combined for just three in the first four frames, while allowing 12 hits.

Waynesboro got four hits in a row for three runs in the second inning. Chambersburg got an unearned run in the third, and another on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth before the game was called because of lightning at approximately 8:50 p.m. At 9:05, the skies began to open with rain, and the game was halted.

The winner automatically qualifies for the state tournament and will play Manheim Township Thursday for the district's No. 1 seed. The loser plays Elizabethtown for the third and final state tournament berth from the always competitive district.
