Storm blows through city

May 29, 2002|by MARLO BARNHART

A sudden spring downpour Tuesday night dumped just more than a half-inch of rain on Hagerstown shortly before 8 p.m.

The brief but noisy storm also set off a number of home and business alarms, darkened some traffic signals and caused a few minor power outages, emergency officials said.

Allegheny Energy spokesman Guy Fletcher said the storm came through Washington County quickly and caused no reported power outages for the utility company's customers there.

A utility pole was hit by lightning in the 700 block of Virginia Avenue around 8:24 p.m., police said.

A man believed struck by lightning in his apartment at 1401 Haven Road, Building C, was taken to Washington County Hospital but his injuries were not believed to be serious, rescue officials said.
