Mail Call for 5/24

May 28, 2002

"Is anyone else getting weird phone calls that sound like a recording that says, 'sorry wrong number' and then they hang up? It is starting to bother me. I was wondering if anyone else was getting them, too?"

"Way back in March when we were told that the school budget would be funded $4 million less than requested, we were told that it was approximately the amount of the teachers' proposed raises. Now that there is only a $1.5 million difference and that is being solved by simply shuffling a few positions, are we assuming that the pay raises have survived intact? I wish The Herald-Mail would investigate and tell us exactly what those raises are going to be. Everyone deserves to keep up with inflation, but if that $4 million is going toward a 5 percent or higher raise, then why are we giving these people more money?"

"Smokers in the state of Maryland ban together. There are so many states that we can travel to to get cigarettes. We need to stand up to these taxes and tell them it's wrong. Hypocrites taxing us for education. It's wrong. Go to other states."

"To the mayor and council. How much is $81,000 worth? We don't need TV in City Hall."

"I want to hear if anyone else is tired of hearing the County Commissioners saying they are broke. How can our county have such a tight budget when they raised the property tax, the income tax, the hotel/motel tax, the landfill fees and the water and sewer fee, which are at an all-time high? Where is the money going? I think we need an outside agency to audit our books. There is something very wrong."

"I have to agree with the Washington County Hospital needing more parking. As to walking up the hill with your tongue wagging out, try walking up the hill when you are in labor, which is what we had to do because we had to park in the parking garage because there wasn't anywhere, even in front of the hospital. Think about this when you build your new one."
