9-year-old says he was assaulted during school Field Day

A 9-year-old boy playing outside during Williamsport Elementary School Field Day activities told school officials he was assaulted in a wooded area near the school Friday afternoon.

The boy was not visibly injured and didn't require medical attention, Principal Carolyn Moore said.

Moore said the child was shaking when he described how a male high school student told him "I'm going to kill you," she said.

The assailant then ran off, she said.

The student was one of 80 children, along with four teachers and parents, outside for the field day when the alleged assault was to have taken place.

"No screams were heard," said Moore.

There were no witnesses to the afternoon incident, she said.

Moore said she called the Washington County Sheriff's Department and deputies searched the school grounds with a K-9 unit.

Deputies were unable to find anyone in the woods, but they stayed at the school until the end of the school day, Moore said.

Police said Friday afternoon that they were treating it as a valid complaint and were continuing to investigate.

Field Day activities were resumed after deputies found no sign of anyone in the woods, Moore said.

After police cruisers were seen on campus, all kinds of rumors circulated through the school, so officials met with students and explained the situation, she said.

"I told them they were safe," Moore said.
