Monday's Local Roundup - Funkstown wins tournament

FUNKSTOWN - Danny Fowler's two-run double highlighted a six-run fourth inning Monday to lead Funkstown Post 211 to a 10-4 victory over Williamsport Post 202 and the title in the Dave Phillips Memorial Tournament.

Brandon Fisher added a two-run single in the decisive inning while Matt Hess drove in a run with one of his two hits.

Williamsport (6-2-1) owned a 3-2 lead in the third inning, thanks to a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the third by Keith Kellinger. John Quail added a homer in the seventh for Willamsport's other run.

Funkstown (4-0-1) took a 4-3 lead in the third with the help of a Josh Carter home run.

Gerry Spessard and Fowler finished with two hits each for Funkstown while Quail had three hits for Williamsport.

WILLIAMSPORT - Salisbury scored in the top of the seventh to turn back Williamsport in the day's opener.

Williamsport's Josh Mitchell and Salisbury's Carson Rathel locked into a pitchers' duel for the first five innings. Mitchell allowed three runs on six hits while Rathel held Williamsport to four hits in his complete-game victory.

WILLIAMSPORT - David Miner hit a three-run homer in the first and Matt Allen had two hits as Funkstown and Williamsport played to a tie due to rain and time constraints.

F&M 14, Post 211 4: Winning pitcher Chris Lloyd fired a complete game with 12 strikeouts to lead F&M. Brett Rosenthal and Phil Schucraft had three hits and two RBI each while Lucas Horst hit three doubles to drive in three runs. Danny Rhinebolt also had two hits for F&M while Tyler Mitchell had two hits for Post 211.

West End Little League

Coca-Cola 11, VFW 1: Henry Fitzgerald fired a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts while Kyle Beers hit a grand slam for Coca-Cola. Zach Whittington added two hits in the win

Maugansville Junior League

Penn Avenue Meats 16, Carbaugh's Tree Service 7: Josh Koontz had three hits and Corey Monroe had two to lead Penn Avenue Meats. Luke Feight had two hits for Carbaugh's.

National Little League

UAW 16, Antietam 8: Steven Weaver and Scott Bennett had three hits each while Kenny Socks added two to lead UAW.

Halfway Little League

Gibney's 6, Gehr 5: Josh Green pitched a complete game allowing four hits and had two hits to lead Gibney's. Dylan Zimmerman had two hits for Gehr.

Federal Little League

Alsatia 19, Kiwanis 6: David Bowen had five hits, including a home run, while Andrew Stout homered for one of his two hits to lead Alsatia. Jesse Jarvis and Ryan Kaplan added three hits each and Jimmy Hill had two in the win. Jeremy Wood had two hits for Kiwanis.

Conococheague Little League

Redmen 2, Taylor Trucking 1: Adam Taylor pitched one-hitter with nine strikeouts and Kyle Cunningham homered for Redmen. Jackson Rowland pitched a three-hitter for Taylor Trucking.

Hagerstown PONY League

UAW 18 Eagles 9: Alex Tyler hit two home runs and Tyler Beard had two hits, including a homer, to lead UAW. Kevin Tyler finished with three hits while Justin Bussard, Ryan Lee, Joe Acre and Chad Bikle had two hits in the win. Phillip Jordan and Karl Scholte homered and Brandon Brown added two hits for the Eagles.

Maugansville Little League

Ruritan 5, Maugans Oil 1: Joshua Constable pitched no-hitter with 10 strikeouts while Cory Forsyth had two hits and three RBI for Ruritan. Brendan Palmer added two hits in the win.

Hagerstown Colt League

FOP 7, Goodwill 6: Adam Thomas had two hits, Kenny Singhas homered to lead FOP. Jim Harmon had two hits for Goodwill.

Washington Co. Babe Ruth

Frederick No. 2 9, F&M Bank 6: Bradley Coyle had two hits, including a home run, for F&M.

Smithsburg 16, Lewistown 0: Ben Mertz threw a three-hitter and Chris Schildt had three hits to lead Smithsburg. Josh Norris and Bobby Bonds had two hits.


Hitmen take third

PINESBURG - Brian Wagner and Rob Rubisch hit more than .800 to lead Kevin Mills' Hitmen/Starlight Inn to a third-place finish in the second division fo the ASA Memorial Day Classic at Pinesburg Softball Complex.

Denny Bryan hit more than .700 while Dwayne Rowland, Jason Draper, Greg Petty and Frank Robinson topped the .600 mark.

Little League HR Derby scheduled

The Third Annual Washigton County Home Run Derby will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at American Little League.

Twelve 12-year-olds and 12 11-year-olds from the county's little leagues will take part in the event, sponsored by Funkstown Moose Lodge No. 2435.
