Thursday's Local Roundup - Maidens lose glove, game in eighth

May 24, 2002

YORK, Pa. - Waynesboro pushed undefeated Southwestern to the limit in the second round of the Pa. Class AAA District 3 tournament, but came a split second short, falling 1-0 in eight innings.

Amanda Joewitt hit a bases-loaded liner that knocked off the glove of pitcher Holly Wagaman. It turned out to be just enough time to score the winning run and eliminate the Maidens.

Southwestern (23-0) put runners on second and third to open the eighth and attempted the plate the winning run with a safety squeeze bunt. Waynesboro fielded the ball and allowed the hitter to reach first and load the bases.

Joewitt's liner sent Wagaman scrambling to find the ball around the mound. She recovered and threw home for the force, but was an instant late.

"We did everything right setting up the force," Waynesboro coach Doug Stuart said. "She catches the ball and its a double play. She tried so hard, but it was a bang-bang play."

Wagaman finished with four strikeouts for Waynesboro (16-8). The Maidens, who managed three hits, mounted a threat in the fifth but it ended with an inning-ending double play.
