POTOMAC, Md. - One month ago, the St. Maria Goretti baseball team was 6-8. After Tuesday, the Gaels are 19-9 and a state champion.

Nick Adenhart struck out 12 in a two-hitter and Josh Carter again provided the heroics at the plate, doubling in the only run of the game in the first inning as Goretti defeated Bullis Prep 1-0 for the Class B title in the Maryland State Private Schools Tournament.

"It was a little scary," Goretti coach Jon Sechler said. "It wasn't the best game we've played, but it worked."

Justin Staubs singled with two out in the first and Carter doubled him home for all the game's offense. Adenhart took over from there, allowing singles in the fourth and sixth and working around four hit batters for his seventh win of the season.

"Obviously Nick and Josh are the keys, but it's nice that it wasn't just them," Sechler said of his error-free defense. "Everybody stepped up and everybody played well. We played solid defense and turned things around."

They capped their season with back-to-back-to-back one-run victories in their tournament run.

"We won three one-run games," Sechler said. "Josh got the winning hit in the Bishop Walsh game, Maret was one of better games I've ever been involved in, and tonight we battled. It was a heck of a season."
