NEWVILLE, Pa. - Collectively, Miley Stymiest and the Waynesboro softball got a monkey of their backs.

Stymiest, who hadn't been hitting much lately, had three hits and three RBI and the Maidens won their first Pa. Class AAA District 3 playoff game since 1992 Thursday, defeating Dover 12-2 in five innings at Heishman Softball Complex.

"She's been on varsity since she was freshman," Waynesboro coach Doug Stuart said of Stymiest. "You like seeing people like that coming through at crunch time."

Waynesboro, which had lost 1-0 and 3-1 in Stymiest's first two district playoff games, put pressure on Dover right away. In the first inning, the Maidens (16-7) took advantage of two Dover errors to plate a run and take a 1-0 lead.

Stymiest got Waynesboro rolling in the second as she led off with a single.

Winning pitcher Holly Wagaman (12-5) followed with a single and ninth-place hitter Amanda Simmers drilled a two-run triple to right field.

"We hit the better today than we did in the last three weeks," Stuart said.

Up 3-2, Waynesboro blew the game open in the bottom half of the third. Kelly Carpenter led off with a single. Sondra Hall's sacrifice bunt was misplayed and the Maidens had two on with no outs. Emily Hess, who also had three hits, followed with a single to load the bases for Stymiest.

"This year, I've had one good at-bat and then I've blooped or struck out," she said. "I was hoping to do something."

Stymiest ripped a two-run double as Waynesboro scored six times for a 9-2 lead. Waynesboro scored three times in the fourth inning as Stymiest, Wagaman and pinch-hitter Adriene Hill all had RBI.

Meanwhile, Wagaman relied on her defense to make plays while striking out six.

"She throws just hard enough to keep teams honest," Stuart said. "She throws strikes and I think our defense and pitching are the strengths of our team."
