F&M Bank at Fountainhead Plaza is robbed

The F&M Bank at Fountainhead Plaza was robbed Tuesday afternoon by a man who produced a plastic bag and told a teller "this is a holdup," according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

"The lone robber went into the bank at 12:38 p.m. implying he had a weapon, although no weapon was displayed," said Investigator Roy Harsh of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Cameras in the bank captured the robber on film, Harsh said.

Authorities would not say how much money the robber got away with.

After leaving the bank, the man was believed to have fled on foot toward the west side of the plaza. K-9 units from state and county police were unable to track the robber for any distance, leading investigators to believe the robber had a vehicle waiting in the area, police said.

No customers were in the bank at the time of the robbery, Harsh said.

"One customer had just left before the robber came in," he said.

The branch, at 13232 Fountainhead Plaza, was closed immediately after the robbery.

Harsh was unsure how many employees were in the bank at the time of the robbery. No one was hurt.

The robber was described as black, 5 feet 3 or 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds, with a stocky build and an unshaven face. He was wearing a Charlotte Hornets cap and glasses or sunglasses.

He also was wearing a black or dark chocolate brown jacket, blue jeans and black sneakers or walking shoes.
