Margaret V. Smith


Margaret V. Smith, 82, of Somerford Assisted Living in Hagerstown, and formerly of Haven Hill Drive, Smithsburg, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 15, 1920, in Bayonne, N.J., she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret Lang Jordan.

Her husband, David W. Smith, died in 1994.

She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Hagerstown, served as a Eucharistic minister, and with her husband received the Archdiocesan Medal of Honor in 1989 for service to the Archdiocese of Baltimore and St. Ann Catholic Church.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Knights of Columbus, Hagerstown, Ladies Auxiliary of DAV of New Jersey, and had been a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Martinsburg, W.Va.

She is survived by one daughter, Ellen M. Smith of Martinsburg; one sister, Mary Jordan of Philadelphia; three grandsons; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol A. Smith, and one sister, Catherine Jordan.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Michael Jendrek will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Ernest R. Barr


Ernest Robert Barr, 73, of 17163 Lappans Road in Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born April 21, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Ernest Ragen and Catherine Frances Clayburn Barr.

He was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He was employed by Avalon Nursing Home, retiring in 1994.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. James Brethren Church, St. James.

He was a member of AARP, NRA and Post 297 American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis J. Schamel Barr, whom he married May 23, 1952; one daughter, Kristi B. Samonte of Frederick, Md.; one son, Gregory R. Barr of Rawlings, Md.; one sister, Sandy Kendall of State Line, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ernest R. Barr Jr.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. James Brethren Church, 17718 Lappans Road, St. James. The Rev. Brian H. Moore will officiate. Burial with military services will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport, which will be open after 9 a.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers; memorial donations may be made to St. James Brethren Church, 17718 Lappans Road, St. James, MD 21781.

Edith J. Sheffield


BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Edith Josephine Sheffield, 91, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Autumn Acres Personal Care Center.

Garree R. Lancaster


BRUNSWICK, Md. - Garree Ruth Lancaster, 67, of 17 E. A St., died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 30, 1934, in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Garrett and Hazel Shull Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Lancaster.

She was a member of First Baptist Church.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1136, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1582 and Steadman-Kennan Post 96 of the American Legion, all of Brunswick.

She is survived by two sons, Garrett Lancaster and John Lancaster, both of Brunswick; one brother, Robert Taylor of Winter Haven, Fla.; and two granddaughters.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, Brunswick. The Rev. Daniel T. Spiker will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery on June 3, 2002, at 11 a.m.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.

Russell E. Schroyer


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Russell E. "Bob" Schroyer, 67, of 11488 Orchard Road, and Quincy United Methodist home in Quincy, Pa., who died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the nursing home, is also survived by his stepmother, Helen Pryor Barkdoll Schroyer of Waynesboro.

Robert L. Shoop Sr., 79, of 20702 Jefferson Blvd., Hagerstown, who died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Washington County Hospital, was born May 14, 1923, in Washington County. He was the son of the late Edgar R. and Ruth E. Moser Shoop.
