Post 211 aims at three-peat

In 2002, the Funkstown Post 211 Legion baseball team will try continuing the success it has achieved during the first two years of the new millennium.

Funkstown has won two straight regular-season championships in the Western Maryland District and twice finished third in the Maryland State Legion Tournament. Funkstown finished 29-8 overall and had a 13-5 district record in 2001.

"I've got a lot of second-year and third-year players that have the experience of playing for the teams that have won back-to-back district titles," Funkstown manager Darryl Powell said. "They have also played in both state tournaments. I feel that we have got our work cut out for us, because everybody will be gunning for us. But I think this group of players is up to the challenge."

The pitching staff returns five leaders from last season. Billy Keyes led the way with eight wins and 76 strikeouts, while T.J. Hose led the team in ERA at 2.23 and also went 4-0. Ryan Wingerd and Josh Carter combined to go 7-2 and reliever Shawn Ryan also picked up three wins in relief.

"I think that so far from what I have seen in practice is that we have a good core of pitchers," Powell said. "I think that I have got a solid group of pitchers and a lot of pitching depth."

While the pitching core has returned, so has a bulk of the offense.

Danny Fowler led the team with 42 RBI and batted .364, and Matt Johnson hit .444 and drove in 36 more. Aaron Showe's 10 home runs were team-high and Josh Carter had 12 doubles and .376 batting average. Also, Matt Allen batted .349 and had 34 RBI.

"We are two-deep at every position," Powell said. "I have got my power guys back. We had some pretty awesome offensive numbers. Offensively, we are pretty stable with a good mixture of speed and power. I think that we are going to be capable of producing quite a bit of runs.

"We are going to have to be able to play station-to-station baseball and to be able to get the bunt down when the situation arises."

Funkstown opens the season today with a noon doubleheader at Cumberland. It plays its first league game Saturday, June 1 against Frederick at Grove Stadium.
