Feelin' bluesy

What started as the germ of an idea nearly a decade ago has sprouted into one of the hottest tickets in Hagerstown and Washington County. Here's how the Western Maryland Blues Fest, version 2002, came to be.

1994 - Talks begin to establish a blues event in the city.

1996 - The first Western Maryland Blues Fest takes place in Hagerstown, drawing roughly 7,000 people for the

1998 - CitiCorp comes aboard as sponsor of Kids Jam Too! children's event; a second stage is added for Saturday activities; Though present since year one, the number of sign language interpreters is upped to six: two for each stage, plus two more at Kids Jam.

2000 is


2001 - Washington County board of education and arts council partner to create educational program Blues in the Schools; 18,000 people attend Blues Fest throughout the weekend.


2002 - Blues Fest takes over the upper level of the Hagerstown Municipal Parking Deck on North Potomac Street parking garage Friday, May 31, for one day; event budget reaches $160,000.
