Post 202 making its pitch

May 20, 2002|BY JACK HILL III

The Williamsport Post 202 legion baseball team is looking for improvement this summer after it finished with a 15-20 record in 2001.

"The team is the hardest working bunch of players that I have ever seen," Williamsport coach Rick Keefer said. "When that happens, you usually have success. Our purpose going into the league this year is to end up in (the state tournament) come August. That is where we intend to be."

Williamsport struggled with pitching depth in 2001. Keefer doesn't expect that to be a problem this time around.

"Our goal going into this season was to upgrade our pitching," Keefer said. "Jason Embly was one of the top pitchers in the Western Maryland District last year. We have got him back and we have added a few quality pitchers in Nick Adenhart and Adam Mills. With the addition of Adenhart and Mills, we feel that we have added two of the top pitchers in the area. Our pitching staff absolutely has more depth this summer."

Keefer believes that Williamsport's run production will definitely improve this year. Keefer feels that he has got guys with speed and that can produce a bunt when they need it.

"Another goal that we had going into this season was to improve our hitting from top to bottom," Keefer said. "Almost every hitter that we have ranks in the top ten in the county in some offensive category. Keith Kellinger, Mike Fravel and Gerad Haupt are three of the top power hitters in the county. There is nobody on this team this year that I am nervous about picking off the bench."

And besides being good hitters, Keefer expects his team to be good in the field as well.

"Defensively, we had one of the top outfields in the district," Keefer said. "We have upgraded our infield defense this year. I think that we are going to be tough defensively."

Williamsport will open its season today by hosting Cambridge in a doubleheader at noon. Williamsport's first league game is Wednesday, May 29 at Grove Stadium against Frederick.
