Memorial Day services set for Sunday

The annual Memorial Day ceremonies of Morris Frock Post 42, the American Legion, Department of Maryland Inc. will be Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m. in front of the Washington County Courthouse on West Washington Street in Hagerstown. The public is invited.

Patriotic Legion member and Past Department of Maryland Commander Russell Lee Fisher, a veteran of World War II who served in the U.S. Army Corps in the 8th Air Force, will be the guest speaker.

Fisher is a graduate of Emmitsburg (Md.) High School and later graduated from Eckels College of Mortuary Science with an associate's degree in bacteriology. He was employed for 24 years as supervisor in bio-lab at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md. Fisher was a flight engineer on a B-17. He had 24 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the distinguished Flying Cross.

He is active in community organizations in Thurmont, Md., Emmitsburg and Frederick, and was post commander, county commander, Western Maryland District commander, Department of Maryland commander, alternate national executive committeeman and national executive committeeman for the American Legion.

The ceremonies will include the laying of wreaths by various veterans organizations in the community, along with comments from Post 42 Commander Milton Rider.

The Morris Frock Color Guard and Honor Guard will present the colors and a gun salute to honor all deceased veterans.

Post 42 will also have Memorial Day services May 26 at Rest Haven Cemetery at 10 a.m.; Rose Hill Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.; and Cedar Lawn at 11 a.m. The public is also invited to attend these ceremonies.
