Man dead after shooting

One man was dead with a gunshot wound to the chest, and another was in custody late Wednesday after a reported argument between two brothers at 11226 Marbern Road turned violent, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

"The suspect we have in custody is being very cooperative with us," Cpl. Roy Harsh said at the scene of the 9:22 p.m. shooting.

Sheriff Charles Mades confirmed that Charles Leatherman, age unknown, was in custody late Wednesday night in connection with the shooting death of his younger brother, Ian Leatherman.

The victim was in an upstairs room of the two-story blue siding house that was bathed in the flashing lights of police cars and ambulances Wednesday night.

"We heard two brothers lived there and they had been arguing," Harsh said.

Mades said the confrontation Wednesday night was believed to have been drug-related.

Wednesday night, neighbor Teresa Brown stood on her porch at 11228 Marbern Road recalling that she thought she heard five or six gunshots earlier Wednesday evening while she was working in her garden around 6 p.m.

"They were very private people ... two brothers, one older and one younger," Brown said.

Brown said she hadn't seen the older brother for about a week. She noticed his absence because the grass was so high in their yard and the older brother usually kept everything very neat.

Deputies were going door to door looking for anyone who had seen or heard anything earlier in the evening.

Investigators Kenny Barnhart and Chris Weaver were interviewing Charles Leatherman Wednesday night at the Washington County Detention Center.

No further information was available at press time.
