SMITHSBURG - Senior Adam Dick has been the catcher all season for the Smithsburg baseball team, except for when it's his turn to pitch.

Tuesday was his turn on the mound in the Class 1A West quarterfinals, and he and Leopards didn't have to do any catching up at all.

Smithsburg jumped on the Panthers for eight runs in the first two innings for an 11-1 victory that moved them into a semifinal game later this week against either top-seeded Southern Garrett or Allegany.

Dick struck out six in five innings and allowed just five hits for his third victory of the season.

"When I can get the first pitch in the zone for a strike, then it just gives me confidence," Dick said. "When I can get a strike on the first pitch, I can pretty much do what I want with all of my other pitches. When they give me run support, my confidence just shoots up and skyrockets."

Leadoff batter Brandon Fisher provided all the offensive support Dick and the Leopards (11-8) would need. He reached base all four times with two doubles, a single and a walk and drove in three runs.

"I was just patient and got my pitches," Fisher said. "I put the ball in play and just hoped for the best. When we had runners on, we did the job by getting them around on the bases. We just played a good, all-around baseball game."

Smithsburg took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Pat Wivell.

Hancock (6-14) got its run in the top of the second when Mark Hoffman led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a single by Jeff Willison.

The Leopards scored six runs in the bottom of the second to raise their lead to 8-1. Jeff Mills capped the rally with a two-run homer to center field.

The Leopards scored one run in the third and then added two more runs in the fifth.

"It was good to score nine runs early, because that is what we have been averaging," Smithsburg coach Bill Fowkes said. "We had extra batting practice on Friday and Saturday and it paid off."
