North Hagerstown's young baseball team had its season ended Tuesday as Atholton scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 7-4 win in the Class 2A West quarterfinals.

"We're young," said North coach Shawn Reynolds. "I thought Cole (Bellon) pitched well enough to win today. We just didn't."

North battled Atholton (16-5) in the early going, taking a 3-2 lead in the second inning. With one out, Bellon worked a walk. Kyle Robinson followed with a single. Then, Matt Ridenour drilled a double into left field that scored two runs. Ridenour alertly moved to third base on a throw home and scored on Sean Palmer's sacrifice fly to deep center field.

"(Ridenour's) a freshman," Reynolds said. "Sure, it would've been a different game if we had scored another run early or made one more play."

Atholton tied the game in the top of the fourth but the Hubs took their final lead in the bottom half of the inning as Palmer singled for a 4-2 advantage.

Altholton, which had 14 hits in the game, took the lead for good in the fifth inning as Joel Kruger and Andy Lancos delivered RBI singles.

Atholton put the game away in the sixth when Vyt Rivers drilled a two-run homer to left.

"I told the kids that this is a learning experience," Reynolds aid. "Every time they step on the field this summer, they need to learn."

Ridenour finished with two doubles and two RBI for North (9-13).

Atholton scored in its first at-bat as Rivers singled home Steven Merson, who had singled and stolen second base.

Atholton stole five bases in the game. Chris Trigger singled home Atholton's second run in the second inning after Andy Lancos was hit by a pitch and stole second.
