May 14, 2002

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - A 77-year-old woman was either run over or dragged by her own car after she reached out of the automobile at a bank Monday morning to pick up a deposit she dropped, police said.

After dropping her deposit at Jefferson Security Bank, Ruth Orndorff opened her car door to pick it up and fell onto the pavement, said Shepherdstown Police Patrolman Keith Knotts.

The car was still in drive, and Orndorff was either run over or dragged a short distance by the car, Knotts said.

Orndorff, who appeared to suffer leg injuries, was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., where she was listed in good condition Monday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Orndorff just moved to the Shepherdstown area from Largo, Fla., Knotts said.
