MERCERSBURG, Pa. - One firefighter was burned battling a fire that destroyed a family's home near here Saturday, said Mercersburg, Montgomery, Peters and Warren Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Nick Barbuzanes.

Firefighters arrived at 5378 Buchanan Trail West around 1:30 p.m. and found the house ablaze.

"Fire was blowing out every window," Barbuzanes said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, he said.

Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Main received first- and second-degree burns on his hands while trying to extinguish the blaze, he said.

Barbuzanes said Main was treated at Chambersburg Hospital and released.

Barbuzanes said the family was spending the night in a nearby hotel.

The fire also damaged an exterior wall of an adjacent house, he said.

The chief said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
