Town Council may purchase $2,000 painting

SHARPSBURG - The Sharpsburg Town Council may buy a $2,000 oil painting of Town Square to display at Town Hall.

Town Councilwoman Patti Hammond described the painting to her colleagues at Monday night's regular meeting. The view is toward Town Hall with the flags waving out front, she said.

"It's something to think about," Hammond said. As a member of the Washington County Arts Council, Hammond could get a 10 percent discount.

The 24-inch-by-30-inch framed painting by David Zimmerman is at the Arts Council Gallery. The painting will be on the cover of Ogden Directories' The Big Book.

Prints of a smaller size might be made, and could cost in the $40 to $60 range, said Barbara Spicher, the council's executive director.

Hammond said the town or a local group could buy and resell the prints as a fund-raiser.

"I think it would be a shame if anyone else got our picture," Town Crier Editor Jan Wetterer said.

Hammond said she will put a deposit down on the painting and try to bring it to Monday night's Memorial Day Parade Committee meeting so her colleagues can see it.
