City Council introduces budget-related ordinances

May 08, 2002

The Hagerstown City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to introduce six budget-related laws, including proposed tax increases, water and sewer rate increases and the budget.

Final council votes on the matters are scheduled for May 28. The council can still make changes to the budget, tax increases or any other item voted on Tuesday before the final vote.

The Tuesday votes were necessary because the items are city ordinances. Ordinances require two council votes, one to introduce the ordinance and the second to approve the ordinance, to become law. The Tuesday votes were to introduce the ordinances.

The items the council voted to introduce on Tuesday were revised electrical and plumbing permit fees, the water, sewer and tax rates, and the city budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1.
