CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A Virginia man was killed about 10 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle at the entrance to the Jefferson Crossing shopping center along Flowing Springs Road, police said.

Charles Pickett, 37, of 6245 Marshall St., Hilton, Va., was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Sgt. Sam Harmon of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Brandon C. Coe, 20, of 129 E. 2nd Ave., Ranson, W.Va., had turned north onto Flowing Springs Road from W.Va. 51 when Pickett crossed the road in front of Coe's 1999 Ford Explorer, said a police report.

In a statement to police, Coe said a truck in front of him moved into the right turn lane to go into the entrance to Martin's Food Market. Coe said he continued straight and heard a "bang."
