May 06, 2002

WILLIAMSPORT - A Martinsburg, W.Va., woman was seriously injured after she lost control of her car on the eastbound exit ramp from Interstate 70 onto Interstate 81 Saturday morning, Maryland State Police said.

Police said a 1994 Ford Taurus driven by Melody Susann Butler, 18, ran off the left side of the road, traveled down a grassy embankment and struck a tree head-on.

Butler, who was wearing a seat belt, was trapped in her vehicle for about 30 minutes while rescue crews from Halfway and Williamsport struggled to get her out.

She was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

She was in fair condition Saturday night, a nursing supervisor said.
