Sophomore Mike Trueblood is learning fast and growing fast.

Trueblood scored four of Smithsburg's first six goals and added an assist, setting the tone as the Leopards went on to beat North Hagerstown 19-6 on Tuesday in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League lacrosse match.

The win assures Smithsburg (9-2, 5-0) of at least a share of the MVAL title.

"We got off to a good start, which is through the practice that we put in every day," Trueblood said. "We have been doing that all through the season. We owe a lot of credit to Coach Dietrich. He does a good job of organizing everything."

Sean Hunt had seven goals and four assists for Smithsburg (9-2, 5-0). Four of Hunt's goals came in the second quarter as the Leopards led 13-4 at halftime.

Kody Snow had two goals and one assist, while Mike Dietrich and Brent Barnes added two goals each for Smithsburg. Matt Holsinger and Justin Mackrell had one goal each and Kyle Schellenberg had two assists. Smithsburg's starting goalkeeper Nelson Velez made 11 saves.

"The kids did a great job," Smithsburg coach Joe Dietrich said. "They all pulled together and they did well. This guarantees us at least a share of the MVAL championship. It was a good team effort. Hopefully, we will be prepared for the playoffs."

Matt Ranieli had five goals and one assist, while Matt Stowell had one goal for North (1-8). Kevin Motz made 16 saves, while Michael Handler led North Hagerstown with 11 groundballs.

"What impressed me the most about Smithsburg was their ability to get open," North coach Dave Parker said. "Too often, they had men open on top of the crease for easy scores. Smithsburg has got a good program. We had moments of inspired play. I had a chance to play some of my younger players and they did very well."
