PARKERSBURG, W.Va. - United Bankshares Inc. has reported record first quarter 2002 earnings of $21.8 million or 50 cents per share.

These results represent a 13 percent increase over earnings of $19.4 million or 46 cents per share for the first quarter of 2001.

First quarter of 2002 results produced a return on average assets of 1.61 percent and a return on average equity of 17.19 percent.

Tax-equivalent net interest income for the first quarter of 2002 was $53.5 million, an increase of $6.4 million from the first quarter of 2001.

Bitner-Henry Insurance Agency

The Bitner-Henry Insurance Agency Inc. of Hagerstown has been named one of Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company's Top 10 5-Star agencies of the year for 2001.

The annual awards recognize an agency's outstanding production and overall profitability. A 5-Star rating is the highest awarded by Brotherhood Mutual.

Associated Builders and Contractors

The Associated Builders and Contractors Inc., Cumberland Valley Chapter held its monthly dinner meeting April 18 at the Plaza Hotel in Hagerstown.

Washington County Hospital

The Radiology Department at Washington County Hospital has announced that its mammography facility received the highest rating possible on its annual U.S. Food and Drug Administration Mammography Quality Standards Act Inspection.

The department received an "all items in compliance" rating.
