Mail Call 4/22

April 22, 2002

"How I miss the days when a neighbor stopped by to say hello as they went down the road in their horse and buggy. If a neighbor came and knocked on the door, they always had a pie or a loaf of bread. And when a neighbor said something good about you. But when I read mail call all I see is where everyone is concerned about what other people park on their property, if their car has tags or if their tractor trailer is ugly. Oh, how I long for the day when a neighbor was a good neighbor, a concerned, kind, loving neighbor."

"I would like to tell the readers of Mail Call. I am originally from North Carolina. I have lived in the Hagerstown area for about 26 years. I have been in the care-giving position of the elderly for 36 years. I have worked in many nursing home establishments. I am here to tell you, I have seen abuse in every one. I am sorry, but it is a fact, one that needs to be dealt with. The answer to this problem is partially the 'granny cams.' When the people know that they are being watched constantly, they are on notice and they will be on best behavior."

"I don't believe that the plane that crashed into the skyscraper in Milan, Italy, was an accident. I believe it was another act of terrorism. I guess they don't want the economy to take a dive again. They are trying to get the fear out of people. Just a few weeks ago, several terrorists in Milan was tried and found guilty. Isn't it strange that a few weeks later a plane goes into a skyscraper and did the damage it did?"

"In response to the very ignorant person who apparently can't tell the context and meaning of a message. Someone said that I should be grateful to be able to talk to my father. My intention was not to have you think I was complaining about having to call my father every night to read Mail Call. I was just using that as an example as to why Mail Call should also be put in the morning paper. I wasn't complaining, I love my father and would do anything for him. Perhaps you need a reading comprehension class, then maybe you would be able to get more meaning out of what you read."

"To the woman in the blue car talking on her cell phone who hit me with her car on Thursday morning outside the Gourmet Goat on Potomac Street: If you are having trouble seeing people when they are crossing the street, then you have no right to be behind the wheel of a vehicle. I can recommend a good optometrist for you, so you can go and have your vision checked out. If you are driving a car, then your one and only priority should be driving the vehicle. If you need to use your telephone, pull over and stop the vehicle and make the call. There is no reason for you to be messing with your phone as you are approaching a red light at a busy intersection in town. Please take yourself and your car and stay off my streets."

"In response to the lady who wanted to know what herbs or flowers to plant along her garden so the deer won't eat them. I spray some old perfume around, go and spray about every two to three weeks and the deer won't bother them."
