Police log 4/17

April 17, 2002

Hagerstown firefighters responded to Expedited Services Inc. at 300 W. Franklin St. Tuesday evening after ammonia was discharged from a compressor inside the building.

"The compressor apparently built up too much pressure and a valve released the ammonia," said Hagerstown Fire Department Battalion Chief Randy Myers. "That is what is supposed to happen."

A passersby noticed the distinctive odor and heard the sound of the valve when it released at around 7 p.m., Myers said.

Firefighters from Antietam, Western Enterprise and Pioneer Hook and Ladder used fans to disperse the fumes, Myers said.

There was no damage to the building or the compressor, Myers said. And there were no injuries.

All units had left the scene by 8:32 p.m.
