Norman F. Shadle Jr.


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Norman F. "Chub" Shadle Jr., 62, of 121 W. Second St., died Monday, April 15, 2002, at his home.

Born Aug. 2, 1939, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Norman F. Shadle Sr. and M. Evelyn Peiffer Shadle.

He was a 1957 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

He was employed in 1962 delivering fuel oil and then as a service technician for Peiffer Heating Oil in Waynesboro. He worked as a service technician for PenMar Oil Co. in Waynesboro until January. He worked part-time flagging at Hagerstown Speedway, and others. In 1974, he was the head starter at Lincoln Speedway; and in 1977, was head starter for Jack Gunn with KARS circuit at Williams Grove, Selinsgrove and Hagerstown until 1981.

He served in the U.S. Army National Guard in Waynesboro.

He was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chambersburg.

He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, Eagles Club, BPO Elks Lodge 731, Order of the Owls Nest 1073 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1911, all of Waynesboro. He was a member and past president of Fraternal Order of Eagles 1758 of Waynesboro; a member, past president and board member of Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown; a member of Motor Knights of Chambersburg, York Racing Club, Williams Grove Oldtimers and Chambersburg Fire Co. He was a member and past board member of the National Association of Auto Racing Fan Clubs.

In 1995, he received the Hagerstown Auto Racing Club Hall of Fame Award. In 1984, he received the National Association Appreciation Award and in 1992, the Fan of the Year Award from Wisconsin Fans for Auto Racing.

He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Toms Shadle, whom he married Oct. 27, 1973; one brother, Harold A. Shadle of Chambersburg; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. Ron Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bernadine M. Rotz


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Bernadine Mae Shaffer Rotz, 61, of 1025 Pine Stump Road, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at her home.

Born March 10, 1941, near Mont Alto, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George Crawford and Hazel V. Blizzard Shaffer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry E. Rotz, in 1989. They were married in November 1968.

She was a 1959 graduate of Quincy High School.

She was employed as a nursing aide at South Mountain Restoration Center in South Mountain, Pa., for 35 years, retiring in 1997.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mont Alto.

She is survived by one son, Daniel E. Rotz of Chambersburg; three sisters, Clarabell V. Cable of Davisville, Pa., Shirley J. Longenecker of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Barbara A. Hayes of Carmel, Ind.; one brother, George J. Shaffer of Chambersburg; one granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Myrtle M. Shaffer.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. Robert L. Basom will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery near Mont Alto.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Shirley D. Guessford


SMITHSBURG - Shirley D. Guessford, 68, of 1 Orndorff Ave., died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at her home.

Born May 7, 1933, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frederick Ernest and Helen Louise Leisinger DeWees.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Guessford Jr., in 1995. They were married June 20, 1953.

She worked as director of Supportive Services for the Washington County Commission on Aging, retiring in 1997 after 19 years.

She was a member of Church of the Transfiguration Episcopal in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

She was a former member of the board of directors and committees of the Arthritis Foundation of Washington County.

She served on the Health Department Committee of Washington County, and Continuing Education Committee at Hagerstown Community College.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia George of Hagerstown; one son, Michael R. Guessford of Newark, Del.; and two grandchildren, Erin M. George and Eric E. Guessford.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Church of the Transfiguration, Blue Ridge Summit. The Rev. Patrick A. Pierce will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Waynesboro, Pa.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
