CLEAR SPRING - Jim Hutson's big deal wasn't a big deal Wednesday afternoon until it became a big deal.

Standing on the edge of their coach's 300th career win for a week, the No. 7 Blazers played down the milestone's significance on Tuesday afternoon, then battered Berkeley Springs 13-1 to put their coach in the record books.

"I finally said to them last night, 'If you can get it out of the way, we can just move on,'" said Hutson, who's in his 26th season at the western Washington County school. "They were anxious about it, too. But they did a nice job today. It's a nice thing to have."

Casey Constable went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI and threw a four-hitter for Clear Spring (8-2, 3-2 Apple Valley League), which busted a two-game losing streak after starting the season 7-0. Tucker Gladhill added two hits and an RBI.

"The kids here have always been so coachable," said Hutson, who won a Class C (now 1A) state championship with the Blazers in 1984 and returned them to the final the next season. "I've never had kids that we've had a real wrangling with. We may get upset during a game, but then it goes past us."

"They've been able to get 12 wins a year, and day in and day out, they've pretty much been as good as anyone. We've felt pretty good that we've been competitive as a little school."
