Local Roundup - Waynesboro at standoff after 20 innings

NEW KINGSTON, Pa. - Holly Wagaman lthrew only 108 pitches to get nine strikeouts over 20 innings on Monday and still didn't know if she won or lost for her Waynesboro softball team.

That's because the Indians and Cumberrland Valley played to a 4-4 tie that was suspended after the 20 innings and will be resumed next week.

Sandra Hall had three hits while Kelly Carpenter and Allison Beck each had two hits for Waynesboro (3-3, 1-2).

Megan Zahnow and Brittany Sirbaugh homered and Berkeley Springs scored 23 runs in the second inning alone in a win over St. Maria Goretti.

Zahnow had three hits and four RBI to lead the Indians (8-3). Sirbaugh, Jess Detrick, Megan Close, Maxie Maggio, Cecile Lucchiani and Ruth Lewis all had two hits.

Sirbaugh and Maggie Smith held the Gaels hitless in the three-inning game.

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg answered North Hagerstown's seven-run fourth inning with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and seven more in the fifth to take an MVAL win.

Jenelle Stouffer, Candace Stanford, Nicki Sier and Anni Brucksch each had two hits for the Leopards (4-4, 4-2). Stouffer and Stanford each drove in three runs. Alyssa Reed struck out seven.

Christina Embly went 3-for-4, while Danielle Brooks and Sierra Routzahn each had two hits for the Hubs (1-5, 0-4).

Susan West struck out 10, but also allowed 10 hits in the loss. Emily Stoner drove in the only run for JB (4-2, 3-2).

SMITHSBURG - Aaron Davis hit a pair of homers and drove in six runs as North Hagerstown (3-5, 3-3) beat Smithsburg in the MVAL.

Davis and Matt Johnson each had three hits to lead the Hubs' 17-hit attack. Travis Carbaugh, Shawn Palmer and Jesse Bennaka each had two hits. Johnson and Matt Tedrick homered.

Jeff Mills and David Gouff homered, while Brandon Fisher and Drew Crawford each had two hits for Smithsburg (1-4, 1-4).
