Suns puts selves in hole again

April 08, 2002

HICKORY, N.C. - Hickory turned back another Hagerstown Suns comeback attempt Saturday as Jeff Keppinger unloaded a base-clearing triple to highlight a five-run seventh to give the Crawdads a 7-4 victory.

Hickory (2-1) held on for the win on the heels of Hagerstown's rally from a 5-0 deficit for a 7-5 extra-inning victory on Friday.

The Suns (1-2) scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game at 2-2. Keppinger got the hit off Julio Pavon (0-1) to prevent another late-inning loss.

Hickory got to Hagerstown starter Ryan Hannaman in the first as Vic Buttler led off with a single and scored from first on first baseman Tyler Von Schell's fielding error.

The Crawdads doubled the lead in the fourth, but Hagerstown got a run back in the fifth when Mickey Miranda singled and stole second before scoring on Robbie Meyer's single.

The Suns tied the score in the seventh when Bryan Carter hit a one-out double and scored on Derin McMains single.

Julio Guerrero won the game in relief and Jeff Miller recorded his first save for Hickory.
