Langdon B. Backus


COLUMBIA, Md. - Langdon B. Backus, 90, of 5400 Vantage Point Road, and formerly of Brownsville, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Vantage House Retirement Community in Columbia.

Born Sept. 16, 1911, on The Homewood Estate in Brownsville, he was the son of the late Garland Clifford and Ellen Rebecca Boteler Backus.

His wife, Catherine Mae Delcher Backus, died Dec. 8, 1995.

He was an administrator for the Census Bureau, and was a shop owner in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Brownsville.

He was a member of the Civil War Round Table.

He is survived by two cousins, John L. Niner of Smithsburg and Linda J. Pohl of Knoxville.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Brownsville. The Rev. John Grim will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

Odessa W. Higgs


CATONSVILLE, Md. - Odessa Webb Higgs, 87, of Catonsville, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at her home.

Born Oct. 16, 1914, in Millville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles S. and Mary Wedler Webb.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver W. Higgs.

She was a member of Shenandoah Memorial United Methodist Church in Millville.

She also was a member of Women of the Moose in Silver Spring, Md.

She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Woods of Upper Marlboro, Md., Sandra Busdeker of Rudolph, Ohio, and Carol Higgs of Baltimore; two brothers, Miller Webb of Bolivar, W.Va., and Vernon Webb of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Shenandoah Memorial United Methodist Church in Millville. The Rev. James K. Hamrick will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry, Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Patricia L. Hosfeld


SALEM, Va. - Patricia Lee Hosfeld of Salem died Wednesday, April 3, 2002.

Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Richard and Julia Floor Schmidt.

She was the medical records director at Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke, Va.

She was a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir.

She is survived by two sons, David L. Hosfeld of Richmond, Va., and Jeffrey Hosfeld of Bedford, Va.; a brother, Lewis D. Schmidt of Winfield, Md.; two grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Cave Spring Baptist Church. The Revs. Glen Pearce and Jim Dodge will officiate. Burial will be in Sherwood Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

John L. Faust Sr.


McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - John L. Faust Sr., 68, of Leisure Living Retirement Home, 29169 Great Cove Road, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at the retirement home.

Born May 18, 1933, in Falling Waters, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Faust and Esther Davis Faust.

He was a truck driver for Franklin Feed Co. in Chambersburg.

He was a Protestant.

He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Blake of Chambersburg; six sons, Howard Faust, Ricky Faust and Mike Faust, all of Chambersburg, Donnie Faust of Indiana, Terry Faust of Greencastle, Pa., and Jimmy Faust of Mercersburg, Pa.; three sisters; four brothers; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Body of Christ Church, St. Thomas, Pa. The Rev. Aletha Painter will officiate.

Eleanor A. Lewis


SMITHSBURG - Eleanor A. Lewis, 89, of Blue Mountain Estates and Reeders Memorial Home, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 12, 1912, in Cavetown, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Nellia E. Colliflower Glenn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Keifer E. Lewis, in 1961.

She retired from Dorbee Manufacturing Co. in Hagerstown.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Smithsburg.

She is survived by two daughters, Alice M. Brown and Joann E. Myers, both of Smithsburg; a son, Robert E. Lewis of Phoenix; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Lewis; five sisters, Josephine Smith, Louise Remington, Florence Reisinger, Genevieve Eccard and Lorraine South; and two brothers, Herman Glenn and Robert Glenn.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. Pastor Mark C. Mooney will officiate. Burial will be in Cavetown Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Mercedes R. Cloe


LEWISBURG, W.Va. - Mercedes Renee Cloe, 18 months, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at her home.

Born Sept. 15, 2000, in Culpeper, Va., she was the daughter of Robert W. Cloe Jr. and Cassandria McDermott Cloe of Lewisburg.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Paris A. Cloe at home; a brother, Bryndin T. Cloe at home; her grandmothers, Dorothy McDermott of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Janet Margarale of Fredericksburg, Va.; her grandfather, Robert Cloe Sr. of Bealton, Va.; and her great-grandmother, Mildred Cook of Bealton.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va. Pastor Frank Blue will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
